This case involved the tragic death of a young man while in the custody of the Elkhart County Jail in Indiana. The evidence in the case established that the young man, who was suffering from schizophrenia, was put in solitary confinement and housed in filthy, inhumane conditions. Following his death, his Estate filed a federal lawsuit alleging that he was subjected to cruel and unusual punishment. The trial court dismissed the case. Dezsi secured a reversal and reinstatement of the case by the Seventh Circuit Court of Appeals in Chicago.
